I'm creating a (Japanese) font that needs to be written vertically. I have tried to adjust spacing using the ascent and the descent but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I can see there is a vertical metrics box in the font options menu but it is greyed out so I can't select it. Is there something else I can try to adjust vertical spacing?

From what I can gather from the font specs, it is Typo Ascender and Typo Descender which will define the default vertical spacing of a CJK (Chinese/Japanese/Korean) font (see www.microsoft.com/typography/otspec/recom.htm#tad" existing applications may .. simply use the sTypoDescender and sTypoAscender fields to describe the bottom and top edges of the ideographic em-box."). These values can be changed in font metrics/advanced (turn off calculate automatically).
The vertical metrics in the options dialog refers to a table that implements different vertical metrics for individual characters. Type 3.2 does not support creation of such a table, and the option to retain this will only be highlighted when you are editing a font which already contains this table.
